Sex Offender Registry

The sex offender registry was signed into law on August 5, 1996.  this law requires any person who has been convicted of a sex related offense such as a rape, battery, kidnapping, assault against a child or mentally retarded person with town police departments.  (This includes juveniles and criminals who have been released from prison, incarceration parole or probation on or after August 1, 1981.)

At least 30 days prior to any release of a sex offender, an agency must transmit information about them to the FBI and to police departments in the towns where the sex offender intends to live, work and where the crime was committed.

Certain members of the public will be able to find out whether a particular person is a convicted child molesters live in the town.  A photograph, physical description, name, home and work addresses can be obtained.

Information will be provided according to the danger that an offender poses to society:

Police departments will provide information only to people who are parents or are responsible for children or mentally retarded adults.

The Police departments must notify community organizations that are likely to encounter the offender, including schools, sports leagues, day care centers and religious and youth organizations, etc.

The police departments must notify community organizations and individuals who are likely to encounter the offender.
